VR4REHAB is an open innovation network dedicated to advancing virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR) solutions in rehabilitation. It connects healthcare professionals, researchers, technologists, and patients to co-create immersive tools that enhance recovery outcomes and promote patient engagement.
VR4REHAB was initiated in 2017 as an Interreg North-West Europe project, aiming to bridge the gap between emerging VR technologies and rehabilitation practices. Recognizing the lack of VR tools tailored for clinical rehabilitation, VR4REHAB brought together seven European partners—including hospitals, universities, and SMEs—to co-develop VR-based applications that address real-world therapeutic needs.
The project focused on creating VR interventions for various patient groups, including children with chronic conditions and adults experiencing fatigue and pain. Through hackathons and game jams, multidisciplinary teams designed and tested applications like “VR Traveller,” “Pain Toolkit,” and “Moving Reality.”
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, VR4REHAB expanded its scope in 2021 to develop XR solutions for post-COVID rehabilitation, addressing challenges faced by patients with long COVID symptoms.
To sustain and grow the network beyond the initial project, the XR4REHAB Collaboration & Innovation Network was established. This platform facilitates ongoing research collaborations, knowledge exchange, and the development of XR technologies in clinical settings.
