The SFI Centre for Research Training in Digitally-Enhanced Reality (d-real) was established in 2019 as part of a national initiative by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) to advance research and training in immersive technologies. The programme is hosted by Trinity College Dublin and collaborates with Dublin City University, Technological University Dublin, University College Dublin, and the University of Galway.
d-real is a structured, cohort-based PhD programme that integrates research in AI, machine learning, and immersive media technologies such as AR, VR, and multimodal interaction. The programme emphasizes interdisciplinary training across three key domains:
Digital Platform Technologies: Including personalisation, human-computer interaction, and AI techniques.
Content and Media Technologies: Focusing on natural language processing, video analytics, and AR/VR.
Domain Applications: Applying research in sectors like health, education, and industry.
Since its inception, d-real has admitted five cohorts between 2019 and 2023, totaling 121 PhD researchers. The programme is supported by SFI and industry partners, ensuring that research is aligned with real-world applications and societal needs.
