AVR Lab

The Augmented and Virtual Reality Laboratory (AVR Lab) is a research center within the Department of Engineering for Innovation at the University of Salento, located in Lecce, Italy. Under the leadership of Associate Professor Lucio Tommaso De Paolis, the lab focuses on the design and development of applications in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR)—collectively known as eXtended Reality (XR)—with primary applications in medicine and surgery, cultural heritage, and education.

AVR Lab’s research encompasses several key areas:

  • XR for Medicine and Surgery: Developing applications that assist in surgical planning and medical training through 3D modeling and immersive simulations.

  • XR for Cultural Heritage: Creating virtual reconstructions of historical sites and artifacts to enhance preservation and public engagement.

  • XR for Education: Designing interactive learning environments that leverage XR technologies to improve educational outcomes.

  • Human-Computer Interaction (HCI): Advancing intuitive interfaces that facilitate seamless interaction between users and digital systems.

In addition to research, AVR Lab is actively involved in academic instruction, offering courses such as “Virtual and Augmented Reality” and “Virtual and Augmented Reality Applications” to undergraduate and graduate students.

The lab also plays a significant role in the XR research community by organizing the International Conference on eXtended Reality (XR Salento), which serves as a platform for scientists, engineers, educators, and industry professionals to collaborate and share advancements in XR technologies.

AVR Lab is a member of the European Association for eXtended Reality (EuroXR), contributing to the broader European XR research and development initiatives.
